Staff in Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) coordinate individual and group tutoring appointments on-site, six days a week in a wide variety of subject areas. It is the goal of the Tutorial Program to provide tutorial assistance for any request made by a student athlete.
SAASS staff members thoroughly screen all prospective tutors for ability in their subject areas. Each tutor must participate in a training program designed to inform them of proper tutoring methods and office procedures. Tutors submit evaluation forms for each contact with a student athlete. Most tutors are scheduled on an appointment basis.
To Obtain a Tutor
To obtain a tutor for any subject area, student athletes must:
- Contact an Academic Coordinator to receive the names of tutors available in the subject area.
- Contact tutors given to see if they are available and/or could meet the student athlete’s schedule.
- Arrange a first meeting. At the first meeting, review course syllabus, identify areas of concern, and describe what is needed for success in the course. Arrange subsequent meetings.
If none of the tutors contacted can meet a student athlete’s schedule, student athletes should get additional names from an Academic Coordinator.
A Collaboration Between the VT Writing Center and
the Student-Athlete Tutorial Assistance Program
The English Department and SAASS have designed a program to provide well qualified and properly trained writing assistance to student athletes. The English Department assists SAASS by providing ongoing supervision, training, and evaluation of the English tutors..
